Field Notes — What We Observed

The opening article for a series that separates what happened in the field from what we expected to happen.

A design can be resolved in the studio and still become new in someone else’s hands.

People notice details we thought were quiet. They ask questions we did not expect. They understand one interaction immediately and hesitate at another.

Field Notes is where we record those moments.

Design Meets Use

VIAMOF is built around interaction. That makes observation part of the design process, not an activity that begins after the work is finished.

When a person encounters the morphing system, we look at what they do before we decide what it means.

Where does the hand move first? Which change feels intuitive? Which explanation becomes longer than it should be? What makes someone look again?

What We Record

A Field Note begins with what can be seen, heard or documented.

We record the question as it was asked. We distinguish a repeated response from a single reaction. We note the context in which an interaction happened.

This discipline matters because observation is not the same as prediction. One encounter does not prove a market. One compliment does not validate a system. A useful note stays close to the evidence.

‍

Where Explanation Becomes Design

Some of the most valuable observations appear where communication becomes difficult.

If a physical change needs too many words, the interaction may need refinement. If a term creates the wrong expectation, the language may need to change. If a detail is repeatedly overlooked, the presentation may be hiding what matters.

These are not communication problems alone. They can reveal decisions the product, image or experience still needs to make.

What Changes Next

A field note is complete only when it leads to a clearer next question.

Sometimes the next step is a product test. Sometimes it is a simpler demonstration, a new image or a more precise description. Sometimes the observation confirms that the existing decision should remain.

We will use this series to show that movement openly: what we observed, what it changed and what we are testing next.

The Record Continues

Field Notes is not a performance report. It is a working record of attention.

By staying close to what people actually do, we keep the system connected to the world in which it will be worn.
